Medical examiner confirms Seau's death was a su...

The laws of physics are responsible for player concussions - not the NFL. The force applied by a collision in the NFL between two players, because of their mass and velocity, can be equal to 150 g’s. Concussions occur at 100 g’s - a force not uncommon in NFL collisions. Run into a brick wall at top speed and you’ll get the idea. Lead with your head, and when you regain consciousness, someone can explain it to you later. I make this point with all due respect to the Seau family and any and all former players and their families who have suffered debilitating health conditions but it seems to one that is left out of the argument. Players may be victims of their own physical nature as they become bigger, faster and stronger. Brain injuries, like concussions and their links to depression and dementia, should not be ignored. However, when someone makes the choice to take their own life there needs to be an examination of other contributing factors. In the case of the three most recent suicides of former NFL players there is another common threat. All three were facing financial difficulties. In 2009, Sports Illustrated ran a story that said 78% of all former NFL players face bankruptcy due to joblessness or divorce within two years of being out of the league. Perhaps a career education program may have helped those players avoid that pitfall.

Medical examiner confirms Seau's death was a su...

I do think there were many contributing factors that led Seau and Duerson to make the decisions they made.

  • physical damage to the brain
  • depression
  • being out of the spotlight
  • poverty
  • drugs

The reality is doctors do not have a complete picture of how the brain functions; injured or uninjured.  If being out of the spotlight is considered to be a better driving factor, then why don't we see more pro athletes (from other sports), actors, or musicians commit suicide more?  I do think trauma to the brain, whether through physical contact or chemically related (i.e. drug abuse, chemical imbalance in the body), can lead to impairred judgment, emotional instability, and a host of other problems.  Until science has completely figured out the brain and humans are using more than just 10% of it, then we may never fully know and/or understand how things truly interrelated with each other.
