NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

May 17, 2012 3:54 pm

Four-star DL Maurice Hurst Jr. from Xaverian Brothers (Westwood, Mass.) picked up an offer from Michigan on Tuesday and he shared his thoughts on it.
Four-star defensive lineman Maurice Hurst Jr. figured a Michiganoffer was close at hand, and Tuesday it came through.

Hurst told Scout.com the Wolverines extended an offer.

"It's a big offer from the the The Big House," Hurst said. "I'm really excited about it. The best of both worlds -- football and academics."

Hurst, who projects as a defensive tackle. told Scout.com earlier this month he planned to visit Michigan in the near future.

As a junior, he made 61 tackles, including nine sacks, and forced four fumbles. He also had 13.5 tackles for loss.

The son of former New England Patriot Maurice Hurst, the younger Hurst's offer list also includes Boston

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

May 20, 2012 7:47 pm

part three of Al Borges' chat with the media during the Mott Takeover at WTKA, he discusses his evolution as a coordinatoor, his study of the spread offense in his year out of football in 2008, this year's recruiting success, and more. ***video interview included***

Michigan Offensive Coordinator Al Borges was on hand for the Mott takeover at the WTKA studio Friday. Here is part three of a three part video.

Quick Hitters

  • He quickly balked at the idea that QB Denard Robinson is slowing him down as a coordinator. He said Robinson is “So dynamic” and that he made his offense work around his skill set and wouldn’t trade Robinson for anybody.

  • Michigan is recruiting pro-style player because this staff are the most comfortable with that style of offense and feels it is the best way to win. Currently they don’t have the players to run a pro-style offense so they adjust and play with what they have.

  • Said Robinson has “professionally enriched me” as a play caller. Said he was “lucky” to be out of coaching in 2008. He said he used that time to study the spread offense.

  • Recruiting has been hard, but notes that their success is because it’s “Michigan”. He said the brand of the University sells itself to the recruits.

  • On Brady Hoke being “magical” in recruiting. Borges said Hoke isn’t magical, “what you see is what you get.”

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 1, 2012 12:21 pm

Talking with Derrick Green you get a laid back, never-in-a rush-with-his-words young man who is taking his time in choosing a school. He continues to pick up offers which is one of the reasons he is not in a rush.

“I am making sure I look at all the schools that are looking at me," he told GoBlueWolverine. "I have no favorites or a leader as of right now."

The Hermitage high school running back is up to 32 offers with most recent offers from Alabama, Miss. St. and Pittsburgh. He has visited Penn State, Virginia and Ohio State as well as Michigan (tho Coach Hoke was not there at the time). Green did talk about other visits as well.

“I went to the Clemson spring game recently and that was nice. I also went to Virginia Tech spring game about three or four weeks ago."

There is however one school that he visited that he still has a great deal of interest in, and it is a school up North.

“I definitely am still very interested in Michigan. I had a good time on my visit last time I was there. I had a chance to talk with Will Campbell, defensive tackle, and then I talked with Denard Robinson -- that was the highlight of the trip. Denard was telling me that speed was the difference in high school football and college football and that Michigan was the place to be. We had a real good talk when I was there. The Big House would be nice to play in, in front of all those fans."

The coaching staff and Green have not lost contact -- in fact Michigan called him last night to make sure of where they stood with him and his recruitment.

“Last night I talked with Coach Montgomery, and he wanted to make sure if they were still in the loop with me. I told him they absolutely were still there in the process. Coach Fred Jackson will be coming out next week to see me work out and go through drills. I do plan on getting back up to Michigan during the summer."

Derrick also talked about what has piqued his interest in Michigan -- the success they have been having.

“I just really like the fact that they will be going to a pro-style offense; Denard mentioned that to me when we talked. I am also building a pretty good relationship with Coach Jackson."

As Green continues to research and look at colleges he does have criteria for what he is looking for in a university.

“Academics first, I would like to receive my degree from the college I attend. I am also looking at my having a close relationship with the coaching staff. Playing time is important, along with the football atmosphere."

With the slow development of his recruitment, it seems quite certain that Michigan is right in the thick of things for the services of Scout300's #124 prospect, Mr. Derrick Green.

Rivals has moved him to #1

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 4, 2012 12:12 am

Henry and his dad are most concerned with informing all the schools and coaches about an announcement. An announcement will be released to the media after he has spoken to all of the coaches that have been recruiting him.

Whenever an announcement is made, we'll be there to let you know.

This is not meant to hint postively for Michigan... just to inform you that whatever the timing, we'll be on top of it just like we were with Ty Isaac.

Some kid's/family's are really private and deliberate with how they handle things. The Isaacs were that way. The Poggis are more so. That's why we haven't always been at liberty to report on some of the happenings in his recruitment and why they've been so successful at keeping details of his recruitment out of the public eye (like secret visits he made during the process that they've made it a point to never reveal in interviews). Despite that, they've been a great family to cover (just as the Isaacs were).

As for some the questions that have floated around the board... it's my opinion that Poggi's decision is not at all tied to Hurst's. In addition, it has long been my opinion that Michigan was being chased by the opposition down the home stretch. I told you well in advance of announcement when my opinion Ty changed based on multiple conversations leading up to it. I will do the same with Poggi (if ever need be). Again, whenever an announcement is made, we'll be there to let you know.

How dialed in we have been (or haven't been) on this recruitment will become abundantly clear before long, so as always, keep it locked here.

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 4, 2012 9:13 am

Baltimore (MD) Gilman DT, Henry Poggi verbally committed to Michigan recently and revealed to GoBlueWolverine.com last weekend why the Wolverines were the victors over Alabama, Ohio State, and a host of other BCS powers. The four-star prospect is commitment #20 in Michigan's stellar 2013 class.

The phrase “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” was for a long time an applicable metaphor for college football recruiting.  That, however, has been less and less the case in recent years as the process became much more like Usain Bolt than Steve Prefontaine.  That’s especially true for the Michigan Wolverines this year.  After securing an astounding 18 commitments by the end of May, the Maize & Blue continued their blistering pace over the weekend by adding two more pledges to their 2013 mix.

One of those commitments – Westwood (MA) Xaverian Brothers DT, Maurice Hurst -- became public Saturday.  News of the other began leaking out shortly thereafter.

“I really do think that it was this week that I really knew,” Baltimore (MD) Gilman star Henry Poggi told GoBlueWolverine Saturday evening.  “I took a visit to Alabama a few weeks ago, and then after that visit I was just weighing the pros and cons.  Then from there I made my decision.  It was definitely very close (between Michigan and Alabama), but I’m 100% for Michigan.  (The first reason) I decided to go to Michigan is because of the academics.  I understand that football is going to be a very small percentage of my life.  I want a degree that can carry a lot of weight, and I know a Michigan degree can do that.”

“The second thing that was most important to me was how I got along with the kids.  I know a few kids in Michigan’s recruiting class like Kyle Bosch.  I’m good buddies with him and I get along with him.  And on a few of my visits I got to hang out with some players (like) Joe Bolden and Taylor (Lewan).  They’re just guys that I think I could hang out with, have some fun, and form relationships with that really mean a lot.  Football is tough so you have to be able to relate to the guys that you deal with every day.”

While it’s clear that Poggi’s appreciation for all of Michigan’s virtues gave Brady Hoke & company a distinct advantage, the similar appreciation from his family may be responsible for making that lead insurmountable.

“(My mom) really really liked it,” Poggi stated.  “She liked Ann Arbor and she really liked the coaches.  My mom’s biggest thing is to make sure someone is going to be there to take care of her baby boy (laughter). She saw that the coaches are good people and she was impressed by that.”

The seminal moment for dad may have come during a clandestine trip to Ann Arbor the weekend after Michigan’s spring game.

“We kept it quiet,” said Poggi of the previously unreported visit.  “(Michigan) had gotten done with spring practices and they were in the middle of their exams.  I went up and I hung out with Taylor (Lewan) and Pat (Omameh). And my dad hadn’t been up before that, so he came up and to see Ann Arbor.  I really wanted him to see it.”

It was the final stamp of approval for a youngster that compared all of his would-be coaches to the standard set by his father.

“He definitely expects a lot out of me,” Poggi said regarding his dad.  “His eyes are always on me.  He wants to see me succeed… I’m his son.  There is some stuff that he can get mad with other kids about and really (let it all out) on me (laughter).  It’s really a blessing.  It’s great.  I wouldn’t want to play for anyone else.  One of the big components of me picking where I’m going to play is I needed to know those coaches were going to look out for me like a father figure.”

“Right when I met coach (Jerry) Montgomery we hit it off.  I think that he’s just a great guy.  I can tell that he really cares a lot about his players.  He told me he is not as much of a yeller and a cusser as he is a guy that tells you what you did wrong, is really going to care about you, and wants to see you do your best.  And I know from my brother Jim who plays at Iowa… he has always told me the most important thing about picking your top choice is your position coach and strength coach.  Make sure that those two people are really looking out for you because those are going to be the guys that you really deal with the most.”

“Coach Mattison... I really liked him too.  He coached the Ravens, which is pretty cool, me being a Baltimore kid.  He actually coached Victor Abiamiri at Notre Dame, who played at my high school.  I talked to Vic about Coach Mattison and he had nothing but good things to say.  I know that (Mattison and Montgomery) are guys who really know football, who are really going to coach me up, and want to see me succeed, but demand a lot out of me… which is what I want.”

The coaching staff in Ann Arbor has already begun mapping out those demands and plotting a course for Scout.com’s #15 DT that could see him become a contributor the moment he steps foot on campus.  Measuring in currently at 6-4, 265 lbs. and capable of running a 4.78 forty, it’s a challenge he believes he will definitely be up to meeting.

Said Poggi, “I’ll start off as a 5-technique and then work into that three technique position.  5-techniques are around 280, then hopefully I’ll put some more weight on sophomore, junior, and senior year and be a 3-technique.  Whatever plays out.”

“I’m a real smart kid,” he added when asked to describe his game.  “I really know football, being a coach’s son. I like to think of myself as a tough player mentally and physically.  I’m a 100%-effort guy.  I’m a great teammate. I always think about those guys on the scout team that don’t get all of the shine.  I think about them first.  I’ve been told that I’m a pretty athletic kid for my size, I’m a good pass rusher, and I’m good against the run… but the biggest thing I’m proud about is my knowledge of the game.”

With recruiting now behind him, this precocious prospect’s athletic focus shifts fully to his current team.  Not a moment too soon for a player that would rather elude the spotlight than bask in it.

“One thing I really wanted to do is not really focus the recruiting process on me (and instead) really have it come to my school,” Poggi explained.  “I wanted a lot of the coaches to come to my school to see other players.  That’s really what Cyrus Jones and Darius Jennings did for me.  Darius was a big time recruit (committed to Virginia) and Cyrus went to Alabama and he was a big time recruit.  They waited a while and coaches came and got a chance to see us.  I wanted to make sure all of the other kids got looks.  I really don’t like all of that attention.  I don’t think it necessarily should be about me.  Right now I’m not focusing on necessarily college.  My goal is to do as best I can for my team this season.   After my senior year I’ll be 100% about college.  Right now I’m 100% Gilman.”

With loads of returning talent, Gilman is poised for another big year.

“Micah Kiser committed to Virginia is a linebacker in my class… Shane Cockerille, who is our quarterback going to Maryland… then we had two guys Miles Norris who is a linebacker and Wyatt Dickerson who is a strong safety linebacker who will end up being D1 guys who are real good football players,” said Poggi.  “Then in the class below me we have Melvin Khein.  He is going to be a real good player.  He is a kid from Africa and is still learning the game, but he is a real good athlete.  Troy Vincent Jr., who is going to be a phenomenal player, is a corner who just transferred from Georgetown prep.  He is a grade below me he is going to be a ton offer guy.  Then Chibuzo Ukandu is an offensive tackle.  In the sophomore class this kid Robert Branch, who is a WR/DB… he’ll be a good player.  Then there’s Ty Locksley who is Mike Locksley kid. He is going to be a really really good player.”

There’s also this kid named Henry Poggi who’s pretty good too. And -- he's a Wolverine!

So, Saban and Urb whiffed, as Poggi spurns them both.  Too bad those guys can't recruit....

Oh wait, that was Hoke who whiffs and can't recruit against the big boys.... Tongue out

Interesting kid, Poggi...  Max preps has him at 25 in the top 100.   Espn doesn't list him its their top 150 (unless I just missed him).  It'll be interesting where he comes out once he's played his sr year.

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 4, 2012 10:40 am

A Nike Football Training Camp was held at Memorial Stadium Sunday. A large number of promising athletes participated, including Crete-Monee superstar receiver Laquon Treadwell. Named an MVP for receivers, Treadwell visited the UI campus yesterday and had a great time.

Laquon Treadwell is being recruited by some of the top schools in the country. He earned the MVP award for receivers at the Nike NFTC held in Memorial Stadium Sunday. Illinois needs receivers, and they are applying a full court press to his recruitment.

Treadwell came to campus Saturday for an unofficial visit that made a major impression on him, enough that he was sending positive messages last night on Twitter. Illini quarterback commitment Aaron Bailey visited also, and the two are developing a good relationship.

"We went on a tour, and then we came in and did a photo shoot. Aaron Bailey pretended he was throwing me the ball. That was pretty cool. We made a little video.

"We had a great time yesterday. We hung out a bunch. That was my first time meeting him."

That relationship is significant because Bailey needs tall, fast receivers like Treadwell to compliment his strong running game. Illini coaches have made it clear there are special opportunities on the team for both. That appeals to the Crete-Monee star.

"Yes, that would be a big deal to me. Me and Aaron are both from Illinois. We can be the face of the school. Most of the players at our positions are going to be seniors when our class comes in. They didn't bring in any receivers or quarterbacks last year."

Still, many top programs are just as eager to recruit him. He listed his top group of schools.

"Michigan State, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Illinois, Notre Dame."

Treadwell mentioned two main factors that will influence his college choice.

"The position coach and the type of offense. I'd like a spread offense or a passing offense with a great quarterback coming in with my class."

That sounds a lot like Illinois.

"Yeah."

Treadwell is enjoying his immense popularity. Whether he decides ultimately to attend his home school, recruiting can become a grind. He's looking forward to making some decisions.

"Everything's been exciting. I'm trying to get used to it. I'm getting ready to be nearer my decision."

The Illini have a way to go to secure Treadwell's commitment, but it appears they are making up ground.

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 4, 2012 11:54 pm

"It was very welcoming," said Mr. five-star Kendall Fuller on his recent trip to Michigan. "The big fan support; the legacy... it is so different once you get up there and see it for yourself. They have one of the biggest alumni networks, and you could feel it."

That feeling hit him the moment he stepped foot on the campus.

"I remember walking through campus and to the stadium," he said, "and it was me and some other top recruits with a lot of kids running up to us asking for our autograph, saying, 'we love you, come here. It was cool that they knew us and showed us so much support."

This would be fun for any seventeen year old, but it isn't something this five-star corner gets too caught up in, in trying to make his college decision.

"I will never be too caught up with it. You want to have good fan support, but that is not the biggest thing that gets your interest," he replied. "It felt like if I were to go there, I would be welcomed. It felt like a second home, and that's the biggest thing Michigan offers."

'Second home' - not a bad description of his weekend with the Wolverines. It also doesn't hurt to have a former teammate on campus in Blake Countess.

"I got to meet up with Blake and we always have fun together. We went out to two restaurants there that were so good. The food there is A plus."

Fuller talks about the vibe he got from the coaching staff.

"I sat down with Coach Mattison, Coach Hoke and it was a real good vibe. They said they would try me out at boundary corner to see how I fit there, so that was good."

Michigan certainly impressed Fuller, who ranked his trip a 9/10. "Nothing is perfect," he laughed. For Fuller, there's more stops on his recruiting road before he slams on the breaks. This weekend, Fuller will attend Virginia Tech's spring game. Keep in mind, he has family ties to Tech (his two older brothers). He also is talking about taking another trip to Clemson with his teammate Dorian O'Daniel, who verbally committed to Clemson this past week. Still, Fuller remains uncertain as to what school is the right fit.

"I am not 100-percent positive right now."

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 5, 2012 4:46 pm

One of the more underrated prospects in attendance last Saturday at the RAS camp in Angola, Indiana, was Warren (MI) De La Salle wide receiver Jack Wangler. He caught everything thrown his way and had the ability to get open.
Last Saturday's Redefining Athletic Standards camp in Angola, Indiana, featured several top prospects, including many with multiple offers.

Although Warren (MI) De La Salle wide receiver Jack Wanglerdoesn't hold any offers to date, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound, senior more than held his own against the best defensive backs.

"I came out here trying to get better and looking to prove myself against the competition," Wangler stated. "Seeing all these great players really motivates me, and it pushes me to get better. I try to get better every day, and this camp really helps me do that."

"I'm the type of player that has the ability to catch the football and also be able to adjust to any pass thrown my way," he added. "I have great concentration and I'm persistent in going after ball in the air. There are times I get knocked off my route, but I don't let that deter me at all. I'm working on knowing the game better, as in knowing where to line up and how to position myself against defensive backs."

Wangler has seen his recruitment pick up over the past few weeks, and he could be close to receiving his first offer.

"I don't have any offers yet, but Miami of Ohio, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michiganhave all been in contact," he explained. "I also have interest from the Ivy League schools, like Harvard and Princeton. I visited Miami of Ohio and I loved it there. They seem very interested."

"I'm going to Northwestern on June 11th, and then to Michigan on June 21," he added. "I'm also going to Michigan State and Notre Dame later this month. I'm looking forward to next season and playing with (Michigan commit) Shane Morris. That's why I transferred, to be able to play with and against the best competition."

Wangler is the son of former Michigan star quarterback John Wangler, who played for the Wolverines under Bo Schembechler from 1976-1980.

NEVER TOO EARLY 2013 RECRUITING CLASS SHAPING UP

June 7, 2012 4:49 pm

Scouting Report: Jourdan Lewis at Nike

1- Allen wanted me to watch him closely and give my thoughts on him, since I had never seen him before.

2- In my opinion, Lewis was among the top 2-3 DB's in attendance. Doesn't have great size, but competes like a banshee. Of course everyone wants corners that are 6-1, 200-pounds. Good luck with that. This kid can cover.

3- Lewis had the best success against Treadwell, and he was about the only one. He had two picks that I saw that were impressive, and one he broke in front of Treadwell to steal it. Another one he ran with the WR and out-fought him for the football. I really like the kid a lot.

4- I wasn't the only one who liked Lewis. Here is what 4-star WR James Onwualu said about him:

"It was great going against (Michigan commit) Jourdan Lewis, and it was my first time seeing him," Onwualu added. "He is a great player and I loved playing against him, and I think we both did well."
