The Tigers already expected Victor Martinez to miss the 2012 season.
Now it's definite.
Martinez underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee on Friday, the team announced Monday. And that was simply preparation for an ACL reconstruction surgery that he will undergo sometime in the next 6-8 weeks.
At one point, the Tigers thought there was some chance Martinez could return in time for the playoffs, if they make it there. But the decision to have the microfracture surgery before the ACL surgery rules that out.
Martinez should still be able to return without trouble in 2013. In fact, the extra surgery could repair some wear-and-tear damage to the knee, and even make him stronger when he comes back.
The Tigers have insurance on Martinez's contract, which means they will recoup much of the $13 million Martinez is due this year. Of course, Martinez's injury spurred the Tigers to spend that money and more to sign Prince Fielder last week.

Victor Martinez has surgery, out for all 2012Don't know what point you are trying to make and how VMarts season ending surgury has to do with your rant. My point is nothing is a sure thing. The Tigers appeared poised with the signing of Fielder, another hot bat in a already loaded line up. Now take VMart out and you have the same Tiger team of the last 2 or 3 years. They maintain the status quo...big deal. As for fan support in Miami for the Marlins this is not a new story. Always has been an issue. Much more fun to go to South Beach and check out the mamitas sunbathing nude than the ball park. What do you do in Detroit? Watch the buildings and the infrastructure crumble? Been to both places for MLB games and vacation and I'll take Miami everytime. Don't count on the Tigers closing the deal this year either. Maybe they do but there are 162 regular seaon games to play and then run the playoff gauntlet. Good luck everyone.

Victor Martinez has surgery, out for all 2012Too bad. After Posey got hurt I had to play VMart, and he impressed me with his smooth hitting. Both sides of the plate looked natural. He still has a future as a hitting coach, I would think.

Victor Martinez has surgery, out for all 2012I hate to tell you but your Marlins are a laughing stock. The Marlins played 80 games at home in 2011 and had 1,520,562 which is a average of 19,007 per game. The tigers played 81 games at home in 2011 and had 2,642,045 which is a average of 32,617 per game.
This tells me your team stinks and your fans don't even care about there team. The city of Detroit maybe down but our fans support all of the teams here even when the Lions were the laughing stock. You have a bunch of band wagon fans and a owner that doesn't care. |

Victor Martinez has surgery, out for all 2012Awful news. Sadly Vmart will probably never be the same again, especially at his age. He is a tough cat from what I saw of him last year playing through pain, but microfracture and ACL repair is terrible news. I hope he fully recovers and like heels said...help us repeat in 2013!!! GO TIGERS! |

Victor Martinez has surgery, out for all 2012With or without him, this team is over-rated big time... the last few seasons have been a fluke for you - this year you will be back to the laughing stock of the league and go back to the classless dirty state/city you are known to be

Victor Martinez has surgery, out for all 2012When MArtinez comes back in 2013 there will be no guarantee he'll be the same player he has been the last couple of seasons so it is a win win situation for both the Tigers signing Fielder, and for Fielder to be getting regular game time
