Cespedes is a free agent, and bidding can begin

Posted on: January 25, 2012 4:49 pm

The bidding for Yoenis Cespedes can finally begin.

The 26-year-old Cuban outfielder has established residency in the Dominican Republic, and Major League Baseball told teams on Wednesday that he is now officially a free agent.

But where will he go, how much will he cost, and how fast could he make an impact?

First, the where: Cespedes himself told reporters in the Dominican that the Cubs have shown the most interest in him, with the Marlins, Tigers, White Sox and Orioles also involved. The Nationals have also shown interest in Cespedes, and the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies scouted him, although it's believed that none of the three will be among the top bidders.

The Marlins have made no secret of their interest, but according to sources, Cespedes has told other teams that he would prefer not to play in Miami. He plans to make his home in the Dominican, rather than in Florida, and may believe that the huge Cuban community in South Florida would add too much pressure and too many distractions.

The Tigers have long been interested, with general manager Dave Dombrowski making a surprising trip to the Dominican Republic to see Cespedes for himself. But Detroit's resources for signing Cespedes could be more limited after signing Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract.

How much will Cespedes cost? No one seems to know for sure, but many teams have been in contact with agent Adam Katz, and it seems clear that he'll get more than the $30 million that the Reds paid for Aroldis Chapman.

How fast does he make an impact? Several of the teams that have scouted Cespedes heavily believe that he would be best served by beginning 2012 in the minor leagues. Given his age and the amount of money he'll likely cost, there will be pressure to move him to the big leagues fast, however.

Cespedes is described by those who like him as a Bo Jackson type, with an unusual combination of speed and power.

Cespedes may not have helped his value by playing briefly and ineffectively in the Dominican winter league, but he may have had other motives for playing for Aguilas. It's believed that people involved with the team also have ties to the Dominican government, and that Cespedes' decision to play may have sped up the process of establishing residency.

In any case, that process is complete, and Cespedes is a free agent.

And the bidding can begin.

It says so on his birth certificate!!!! Written in crayon.....

The guy is more than likley 30 + yet he can run like a cheetah, hit a baseball 600' plus, leap tall buildings in a single bound but yet nobody finds this strange??? He is a physical specimen and I would bet my house on it that he is NOT natural. Teams are tentative about taking him for good reason!!!

That is why I said -- don't be suprised to see Detroit going after Cespedes.

I'll be blown away if we find out in the end that Detroit didn't make Cespedes and his people a serious offer.  And the more I read what Dombrowski is saying the more I believe he's going after him full blast.  Dave tells us it's "unlikely" Cespedes ends up a Tiger yet in the same conversation tells us "you never know".  I don't believe for a second Dave doesn't know where he stands in those negotiations.  If he was out of the picture he would tell us he's out of the picture, but he's not saying that, just as he didn't when he was asked about Prince Fielder.  He left the door open then shocked the baseball world with that signing, a lot like the Angels shocked everybody with the Pujols signing.  I'm not sure if Cespedes is the answer or not in left field, but I think Ilitch is willing to throw a ton of money his way and roll the dice.  We'll see what happens...

The Yankees have solidified their rotation and pen with an almost equal lineup. The Angels have a better staff and an almost equal lineup. I still see a first round exit unless they make a trade for another trustworthy starting pitcher. Garza is available if you're gonna be all in you better make it happen. Verlander can't win a playoff series by himself.

That first line was my favourite line of all in this thread, the Yankees have "solidified" their rotation.  How did they do that again?  They added a 36 year old N.L pitcher and a kid coming off a rookie season that had 3 good months in MLB and 3 bad months in the end, his last 3 months his era was around 5.30.   Yet the Yankees have automatically improved?   As for the first round exit prediction,  I'm not sure where that comes from, but anyway, have a great day

I agree. I said long ago that if Cespedes was looking to "the man" and play to his people, he would falter and be a bust. However, seeing that he prefers not going to Miami for the reasons stated, it shows he is serious. I hope the Tigers can land him, lead him off, play him in LF and the Tigers will be the team to beat for years to come.

Is no one concerned about pitching? Verlander is the only sure thing on the staff. They will win the divsion because the other teams are bad but how can their staff compete in a playoff series? Texas has a better staff, bulpen and lineup. The Yankees have solidified their rotation and pen with an almost equal lineup. The Angels have a better staff and an almost equal lineup. dusty,

detroit has the top pitcher in all of baseball as their #1 starter.  they acquired doug fister at the trade deadline last year.  he fininshed 4th in ERA and 6th in WHIP in the AL.  that is now our #2.  Scherzer is now our #3 and Porcello is our #4.  The 5th starter is undecided, but they have one of the top pitching prospect in the minors in Jacob Turner, as well as a slew of left handed starters, in Drew Smyly, Casey Crosbly, Duane Below, etc.

They re-signed the top closer from 2011 -- Jose Valverde (went 49 for 49 in save opportunities), they have Benoit and also signed Octavio Dotel to pitch the 7th.

so you can call verlander the only 'sure' thing on the staff, but fister finished with a 2.83 ERA in 2011, or better than any pitcher the Rangers have on their roster.  does this mean the Rangers have zero sure things on their roster???

also -- you can say the Angels have an 'almost equal' lineup -- but it isn't even close.  People seem to forget, not only was Cabrera an all-star last year, so was Avila at Catcher, Peralta at SS, and now Fielder has been added.  On top of that -- Verlander was an all-star and our closer was an all-star.

just a little reminder to you regarding the Angels compared to the Tigers:

BA:  Detroit .277  LAA  .253
Runs:  Detroit 787  LAA 667
HRs: Detroit 169  LAA 155

LAA added Pujols -- Detroit added Fielder.  You figure out which lineup is better.

No hitting can offset the liability of a non-functioning 3B. Its too critical of a position and Cabrera simply cannot play it anymore at this point in his career. I've heard people talking about him being a better fit in LF, which I think makes a lot more sense. But why should Miguel Cabrera, arguably the best hitter in baseball, have to move from his natural position for anyone?
