Danks to sign $65 million deal with White Sox

Take John Danks off the list of pitchers on the trade market.

And slow down the rush to say that the White Sox are completely rebuilding.

The Sox have worked out a five-year, $65 million contract extension with their left-handed starter, who they had spent the early part of the off-season offering to other teams in trades. The deal, sources tell CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, is pending a physical exam and is expected to be announced after Christmas.

The 26-year-old Danks would have been eligible for free agency after next season, which is one reason the White Sox were so willing to move him and also why they had trouble getting what they wanted for him on the trade market. Danks, a 15-game winner in 2010, slumped to an 8-12 record and 4.33 ERA in 2011, his worst year since he was a rookie in 2007.

While some people asked quickly whether the contract would simply make Danks easier to trade, it's highly unlikely that the White Sox would trade him now. At his age and talent level, he fits more (now that he's signed) as the type of player the Sox would be trying to acquire than one they would want to move.

More likely, the White Sox will now attempt to rebuild around him, perhaps speeding up general manager Kenny Williams' building process.

Williams had declared the Sox open for business as of the general managers' meetings in November, and when he traded closer Sergio Santos to the Blue Jays during the Winter Meetings, Williams openly used the "rebuilding" word when discussing his team.

Williams has been willing to trade Gavin Floyd, Carlos Quentin, Matt Thornton, Gordon Beckham and others. It's not yet clear how or whether signing Danks to an extension will affect those plans.

Danks to sign $65 million deal with White Sox

It`s not as bad as Carlos Zambrano...or is it??  Love seeing Cubs fans high on Theo chime in. No franchise knows about pitching and long term deals better than the Cubbies right? After the worst signing ever in 2010 of Adam Dunn the White Sox should take a couple years off and shed the fat like Rios, Dunn, AJ.

Danks to sign $65 million deal with White Sox

I am an avid White Sox fan, and have watched most of Danks' starts over his career. His W/L record should be much better. I have not seen a worse luck pitcher in the last 30 years of watching Whie Sox baseball. I think the management wanted to send a message to fans after losing Buehrle. Basically, they chose the younger Danks over Buehrle, and their numbers have been similar over the last few years. Danks had an awful start last season, but did pitch well in the second half. Yes, I'd think that he got overpaid a but....he has been more like a 9-10 mil a year guy based on the market. They are paying him for potential. He will be 27-32 years old over the term of his contract. Chris Sale will be in the Sox rotation along with another youngster, either Humber or Stewart. Those guys will have limited innings, especially Sale, so it was crucial to have a 200 innings guy like Danks to save the bullpen some.

Danks to sign $65 million deal with White Sox

There is no doubt despite his record last year that John Danks is a solid left handed pitcher.  He may possibly be the ace next year and the years to come for the White Sox but that isnt saying much and in no way is worth 13 million dollars a year.  Just to put in perspective how over paid he may have been, here is a few pitchers that Danks will be paid more than on average in the next couple of years... Felix Hernandez, Dan Haren, Jared Weaver, James Shields, and Justin Verlander.  Depending on the specifics of the deal if Danks were to make exactly 13 million next year he would be getting paid almost double of Jared Weaver's salary and triple James Shields.  The potential is there but after 6 seasons of a combined sub .500 record and an era above 4, 65 million dollars quite possibly could be about 20 million more than what he is worth.

how do they give someone that much money after having the year they had the year before?  and the year before that doesnt matter too me.  lets see how he does this year.
Maybe the White Sox think that he will a better season next year and get better after that, Danks is going in his 6th season as a White Sox and he has 2 bad seasons out of 5.  This coming season we are going to see if the White Sox made a mistake or not, also if Danks don't get more Run support he won't do much better.

I love how records make everyone blind to talent.  Danks had gotten screwed out of a lot of wins this year cause of our crap offense.  A 4.33 era is a slump year?!  Its not ace work but its not garbage either, especially for his worst year since his rookie season.  Hell that would probably get him 15 wins in boston or new york.  It definitely wasnt his best year but his track records is pretty solid, I like this move, wether he stays or goes in a trade
