Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

Matt Kemp fell one home run short of 40-40, and he fell just short of winning the Most Valuable Player award in the National League.

His solution?

"50-50," Kemp said on a conference call Tuesday. "I'm going to go 50-50. You all created a monster."

No player in baseball history has ever had 50 home runs and 50 steals in the same season. Alex Rodriguez came the closest, with 42 home runs and 46 steals with the Mariners in 1998. Only three other players have had a 40-40 season: Jose Canseco with the 1988 A's, Barry Bonds with the 1996 Giants and Alfonso Soriano with the 2006 Nationals.

"Anything can happen," Kemp said. "I'm going to set my limits high. Yes, I'm serious. I know you're thinking I'm crazy, but I'm going to take it to another level."

Kemp said finishing second in the MVP vote would serve as motivation, but he didn't criticize voters for selecting Braun, and said that he felt Braun was a deserving winner. Braun received 20 of the 32 first-place votes, with Kemp getting 10 and Prince Fielder and Justin Upton splitting the other two.

"I'm happy for Braun," Kemp said. "He's one of my favorite players. He's a great player."

Then, referring to his new eight-year, $160 million contract with the Dodgers, Kemp added: "I've got eight more years in LA to try to win one."

Kemp led the National League in home runs and RBI, and finished third in the batting race behind Jose Reyes and Braun. But Kemp's Dodgers were a non-factor in the pennant race, at 82-79, while Braun's Brewers won the NL Central.

"I respect the decision," Kemp said. "I just have to have an even better season next year, and make the playoffs, so I can make the decision easier for them."

And 50-50 wouldn't hurt.

Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

Yawn....  That beast worked out well for you, didn't it Matrty?  You know, they say those that use PED's often have big jumps in stats, and often later begin to suffer injury after injury b/c of the unnatural strain the rapid strength gains put on their bodies.  Here we are a year later, and Braun once again puts up numbers that match and in some cases slighlty exceed his average for his whole career, Kemps follows up his monster year in 2011 (for him career wise anyway) by vocalizing unrealistic goals and then having injury after injury pop up.  BE VERY CAREFUL WHO YOU POINT THE FINGERS AT, Dodger fans.  Reports say over 1/2 of MLB players are using synthetic testoserone.  It would be a real shame for you to have all this self-righteous indignation over Braun, and then find out your own man - Kemp - was using all along.

So you are saying that a $140 million dollar payroll could lose 105 games minus one player. The dodgers are in real trouble if they could lose 105 games and spend that much money.

Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

You know during the season, everyone was of Braun's camp, and agreed that his teams performance was a big deal. Remember guys? Duh, winning. What players are supposed to be doing, not compiling stats (although they most commonly work to the same end). So the voters read and wrote the articles and fanmail and voted. Now, I guess every looked at both players' lines and thought, well wait, Matt Kemp had better numbers, plus his Dodgers DID win 82 games. And this is why awards should be handed out directly after the postseason, because the public will remember what they saw and evaluated during the season. First off, about those 82 wins, you should remember that the Dodgers got off to a dreadful start and were never even an afterthought in the playoff race. Maybe if the Dodgers had contended Kemp would have won this award, but all year long, Kemp was playing meaningless games. Second off, what kind of evaluation for players from non-contending teams? You remove Kemp from LA and...the Dodgers still don't contend?? Remove Braun from Milwaukee and the Brewers probably go from a favorite going into the playoffs to a contender who drops out with 2-3 weeks to go.

Anyway, this is the beauty of athletes. If Matt Kemp is so PO'd that he didn't win the MVP and whats to show us what's up by going 50-50...then that's exactly what he should do. Go for the award next year...

Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

MTR, you are just plain wrong when you say, "Your choice to start a new team, Kemp or Braun, it will be Kemp every time,"  EVERY TIME??!!  Way to go overboard dude.  I say B.S.  Consistency matters and that is why the majority of GMs would take Braun not Kemp.  Let's look at the 5 years both players have played at the same time.  Braun clearly had a better year than Kemp in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.  And in 2011, he had arguably as good a year as Kemp whose supporters conveniently never mention his 159 strikeouts and 5 errors.  And you say "Your choice to start a new team, Kemp or Braun, it will be Kemp every time,"  Every time, really?????????  Unless you can write with some objectivity, please don't write at all.  Your credibility is shot with such an asinine statement.  By the way, nobody laughed when Kemp said 50/50 b/c nobody wanted to be rude.  Nobody laughed when CJ2K said he would rush for 2,500 yards last year either, but do you think anyone actually believed him, either?
cry a little more about it why dont you

Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

The voters got it wrong again. Braun is good, no doubt about that but if you take Kemp away from the Dodgers they lose 105 games easy and probably finish dead last in the NL West behind even the pathetic Padres.
Take Braun out of the Brewers line-up and they still win their division. I guess since they voted Kershaw the CY they couldn't vote the MVP to Kemp.
I hope Kemp is right when he says it motivates him.

Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

If Kemp was not playing for the dodgers and half his game at Dodger Stadium.  He would have hit many more home runs and would have been the runaway MVP.  To lead the leage in homers, be one away from  40 40 season and play in LA is really tough.

Kemp shoots for 2012 MVP ... and 50-50

Don't know much about Kemp myself being stuck out here in Brewerland(yes, I'm a Brewers fan.) But based on what I have read the vote for this award could of gone either way and Braun was more than likely propelled to the award by being on a winning team. That being said Mr. Kemp has taken this with grace and is a very respectful player. I wish him luck on his quest for Fifty- Fifty next season and hope he attains his goal.Cool
