The Giants, who have been looking for small upgrades since making the big deal for Carlos Beltran, have acquired Orlando Cabrera from the Indians.

The much-traveled Cabrera became expendable in Cleveland when the Indians called up top prospect Jason Kipnis to play every day at second base. Cabrera is a shortstop by trade, but the Indians signed him to play second, alongside Asdrubal Cabrera (no relation).

The Indians got Thomas Neal, a 23-year-old Triple-A outfielder, in exchange for Orlando Cabrera.

Cabrera, who has been on playoff teams each of the last four years (in four different cities!), will likely play shortstop for the Giants. The Giants' .579 OPS at shortstop is the worst in the National League, and 29th in baseball ahead of only the Rays.

Cabrera is in the Giants' lineup at shortstop for Sunday's game in Cincinnati.

Brandon Crawford and Mike Fontenot had been sharing time at short. Crawford was optioned to Triple-A Fresno to make room on the roster for Cabrera.

Cabrera went to the playoffs with the Angels in 2007, with the White Sox in 2008, with the Twins in 2009 and with the Reds last year.

Now he's headed there again, with the Giants.

ezmover,

LMFAO....  Really?!  "Best" team... what exactly does that mean?  Team that won the most during the regular season?  Team that had best stats?  Team that had best talent?  Team you liked the best?  You clearly have cheesesteak in the brain.  The "best" team where I am from is the team that wins the post season tournament... in baseball it is called the WWWW-OOOO-RRR-LLL-DD  SSSSSeeee-RRR-I-EEEEs.  I typed it drawn out so you could actually read it to yourself.  Best team....LMFAO.  Thanks for the laugh.

Giants need to make it to the post season this season and have a fight on their hands.  They are not nearly as good as Philly this year...(wink)(wink).  If you are asking David Smith and Giants fans to chew on something, why don't you SWALLOW the reality that was last year.  I will give you a moment....  (sound of elevator musik playing)....  did you finally swallow that defeat?  Giants won it last year.  They had not business being there and were only able to clinch a spot on the last weekend of the season.  They may stumble this year and that would suck.  But we still have 2010 and always will.

Get over it and focus on your team not the Giants so much.  LOL.

GO GIANTS!

Exactly what planet are you on ezmover2020?  The San Francisco Giants are playing without Posey and an average Lincecum.  They have Barry Zito stinking up the place and they still are in first place going into August.  They play the Arizona Diamondbacks this week and the scrub pitchers are not pitching.  The best team does always win the World Series.  After 162 games and several rounds of playoffs and best 4 of 7, how can you even get from here to there.  This isn't one and done like football.  I believe that you might be a disgruntled Texas Rangers fan.  Either way the Giants are on the way again and Philly isn't the hurdle, St. Louis would be the issue.

I have no idea how SF won the WS last year.Clearly the best team doesn't always win.David Smith, your Giants don't stand a chance of beating Philadelphia. In case you haven't noticed Arizona is playing well & are only 2 games back.SF might have to settle for a WC & if they stumble they may not even make the playoffs.Chew on that for a while.
