Indians get Fukudome from Cubs

The slumping Indians have acquired outfielder Kosuke Fukudome from the Cubs.

The 34-year-old Fukudome has been mostly a disappointment in his time with the Cubs, but he has a .374 on-base percentage this year, and is in the final year of his contract. The Indians will give up two low-level and low-value prospects in exchange (Abner Abreu and Carlton Smith), and the Cubs will pay most of the remaining money on Fukudome's contract.

In other words, this is the kind of low-risk acquisition that fits the surprising Indians the best.

The Indians were no-hit on Wednesday by the Angels' Ervin Santana, and they've scored just seven runs in their last five games. They remain just one game behind the Tigers in the American League Central, despite going just 22-35 in their last 57 games.

The Indians are in a somewhat tricky situation. They want to show their players and fans (attendance has been up at Progressive Field) that they're trying to make the most of this surprising opportunity to win, but at the same time they need to preserve their best prospects in order to have an even better chance to win big in the years to come. So while the Indians showed interest in both Carlos Beltran and Ubaldo Jimenez, the two biggest names on the trade market, a deal for either one never seemed likely, and wouldn't have made much sense.

Fukudome costs much, much less in prospects, but could give the Indians at least an incremental boost.

To the Indians fans thast don't like this deal... what is not to like?  Do you honestly believe that we have a shot if we were to win the Central?  No way we can beat Boston, NY or Texas in a 5-7 game series.  I'm a die-hard Indian fan and I know the big plan does not come for 1-2 more years.  If they gave up any of the big 4 (White, Pomerenz, Chisenhall or Kipnis) for a rental of any of these free agents I would have been livid.  Be patient Tribe fans.  We don't want to give up the farm because we have had a surprisingly good year.  The Tribe have the pieces in place to contend for a long time, but those pieces have to develop before we can just go "all-in."

I'm happy with Fukudome.  Gives us a nice Corner OF (especially with the absecnce of Choo), and a solid stick, who gets onbase alot.

Cheer up indians fans. This is a very good deal. He is an ideal 2 hole hitter and a plus defender. He could make a big difference in close games with glove and arm. Coming from the NL he will be tested alot with single to right and a runner on second and more often than not he will get them at the plate. Defense is huge when you don't score alot of runs.

I think you need to remember that the Tribe doesn't have a lot of options - the team is still working on other deals to bring in a legitimate offensive threat. Hunter Pence is probably unlikely to leave Houston or end up with the Indians, and he's the best remaining offensive guy on the market.

Look, I'm not that happy either with Fukudome, but realize that he is now the 4th best hitter on the team (only 3 guys are over .260) and the Tribe was able to send Buck down to Columbus. I wish they had sent Kearns, since he is complete garbage, but at least one of the 2 is gone. The team needs another bat desperately, and hopefully they don't pick up Ryan Ludwick. This team doesn't need another .220 hitter - just look at the bottom five of the lineup.
