Yanks say Hughes is healthy, but should he start?

BOSTON -- The Yankees continue to insist that Phil Hughes will be all right, even as rival scouts debate whether Hughes will remain in the rotation for even one more start.

Hughes' fastball has been missing since the start of spring training, and his first two regular-season starts have both been awful. He lasted only two innings in Friday's 9-6 Yankee loss to the Red Sox Friday, giving up six runs on seven hits.

But Yankee manager Joe Girardi said again Saturday morning that he doesn't believe that Hughes is hurt, and that the team has no plans to have him checked out by a doctor.

"He's had no complaints," Girardi said. "There's nothing to lead us to believe something's bothering him."

Girardi has tried to play down Hughes' velocity problems, and he did so again Saturday.

"I'm not going to panic about his velocity," Girardi said. "I believe it's coming back. I believe it's going to be there."

As of now, Hughes is scheduled to start again on Wednesday against the Orioles. The Yankees could start Bartolo Colon in his place, or could even start Freddy Garcia and push Hughes (or Colon) back for a few days.

Yanks say Hughes is healthy, but should he start?

It is time to call up Banuelos. I know he is young but there is no way he could be any worse than Hughes
I think I'd give him a couple of minor league starts before bringing him up. It's true that Hughes hasn't been good throughout spring training and so far this year, butI also know that Yankee fans, of which I am one, as a whole have no patience at all, and want instant gratification.

I agree that Banuelos is going to be good and should make his debut this season, but lets not throw him into a situation where he is set up to fail. Meaning we put too much on his shoulders out of the gate. I don't think that anything is physically wrong with Phil Hughes or the Yanks wouldn't pitch him. I think it's a problem with his mechanics and adjustments can be made for that. If Hughes gets back into form, he'll be fine. Better than Colon or Garcia. I think it's too soon to give up on Hughes for the next wonderboy in the system.

The Yanks baby their prospects for far too long.
I totally agree with this. They baby them and then when things arecritical they throw them into the frey. Then they watch them struggle and people question the kids talent. They did that with Brad Halsey in 2004 and Ian Kennedy in 2008 along with Hughes. They mismanaged Joba from the start. Joba rules and not using him correctly almost ruined him. He still has issues with the mental aspect of the game.
