Cabrera must prove he's 'sincere' -- over time

Dave Dombrowski says we should all be able to see how "sincere" Miguel Cabrera is.

I hope the Tigers general manager is right. I'm not sure I saw it.

I'm not sure I'm ready to buy it -- yet.

There are so many things Cabrera and the Tigers didn't say during today's press conference to announce his belated arrival at spring training. There are so many things they can't say, for legal or other reasons.

I get that.

I also get that I'm not a doctor, have no experience in treating alcoholism, and in any case I haven't examined Cabrera and don't have all the information.

It would be crazy for me to say that the program that baseball and the Tigers have set up for Cabrera is the wrong one. I'm not sure how I can say it would be better for him to be away from the team in some rehab facility, if the doctors truly believe that this path is the right one.

I hope they're right, but more than that I hope that Cabrera really is committed to it, and that he's not just doing whatever they say he needs to do to get back to playing baseball. I hope he has taken to heart what teammate Magglio Ordonez said last week, that "he's a superstar, and he needs to act like a superstar."

On the field, and off the field.

He needs to prove that, and he can't prove it with one press conference, especially not with one press conference where he won't say whether he's an alcoholic, won't say how many times he fell off the wagon, won't say if there are any family issues that caused it and won't say exactly what he's doing about it.

And especially when it comes a year after other interviews where he said he had stopped drinking, a claim that is now a lot harder to believe.

Cabrera hasn't earned our trust back -- not yet.

I'm not sure he could have earned it back with one press conference. I'm not sure he could have proved to us he was "sincere" by making a statement and answering (or not answering) a few questions.

He has to understand that we'll be watching him, and he has to understand that a lot of us will remain at least a little skeptical.

He has to understand that this time, it's on him to prove that he's sincere.

And it's not going to happen in one day.

Agree. Miggy needs to step-up, get the help he needs and prove that this incident (his thrid with alcohol as a Tiger) is under control, and that he truly is sincere. If the Tigers have serious plans to make a run for a pennant before Mr. I passes away, they need to handle Miggy, and handle him now and properly.
He is an awesome player, one that the Tigers should build around to win a championship(s).
