The Yankees really need another starting pitcher, but there just aren't any good ones available.

So they went for the best reliever instead.

Rafael Soriano, who led the American League with 43 saves for the Rays, is headed to the Yankees to become Mariano Rivera's setup man. A source familiar with the talks confirmed Thursday night that Soriano will sign a three-year deal for $35 million.

Soriano no doubt would have preferred to go to a team where he could close, but the Yankees apparently offered him enough money to make up for the lack of save opportunities. SI.com's Jon Heyman, who was first to report the deal, said that Soriano can opt out after either of the first two years, but unless Rivera gets hurt and Soriano gets a bunch of saves in his absence, it seems highly unlikely that he would choose to go back on the market.

Rivera turned 41 in November, but he is coming off his usual outstanding season, and just signed a two-year, $30 million extension. Theoretically, Soriano could step in as close in the final year of his deal, although it's hard to project how the bullpen will look by then.

For now, Soriano steps into the role that Kerry Wood filled at the end of the 2010 season. If he can duplicate what he did last year for the Rays -- a 1.73 ERA, an 0.802 WHIP with a .509 opponents OPS -- he could give the Yankees the best eighth- and ninth-inning combination in the game. The Yankees still have David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain for the sixth and seventh innings, and they signed Pedro Feliciano as a situational left-hander.

Soriano's decision to sign with the Yankees is another blow to the Rays. While they were resigned to losing Soriano and Carl Crawford, among others, to free agency, they can't be happy that both Crawford (with the Red Sox) and Soriano both landed with rivals in the American League East.

And what do the Rays get? Well, they will get the Yankees' first-round draft pick, since Soriano was a Type A free agent. The Rays will get a pick from the Red Sox, as well.

Ahhh u must be nodding off after the dope goes to your brain, the only lockdown inning for the NYY is the 9th, JOBA trys to sneak his MEAT TYPE FASTBALL, and gets WHIPLASH watching Homers hit the old Yankee Stadium.... And La La Land tells you guys there is a theory called the Verducci Rule and HUGHES IS A #1 Candidate for 2011, he was overworked last year, his era was mid 4's but he did have a good record, he was a 5 inning guy, and by the AS Break will be an 5 inning guy again.. THE NYY got a year older, Afraud is lookingg like he is so stiff, and now his " MAGIC INJURY DOC IS IN JAIL" he cant hop a flight for his potion, aka HGH COCKtail, emphasis on the, because he is so vein, heard the NYY took out the hallway mirror because AFraud wld almost give it 2 bumps and a sqizze prior to entering the dugout....
