The Rays and the bullpen gamble

For the Rays to challenge in the American League East this year, they need to make moves that make you say "eh" right now.

Or moves that make you scratch your head.

They need to do things like gambling $3.25 million that Kyle Farnsworth is going to be good this year.

I'm not any more convinced than you are that they'll be right on Farnsworth. I am totally convinced that the only way the Rays compete in the American League East in 2011 is to take chances.

They lost nearly their entire bullpen (393 appearances, 49 saves) to free agency. With the payroll going down, and prices for relievers going up, the Rays couldn't keep those guys, and they couldn't replace them with anyone coming off a great year.

They couldn't make any move that would make a Rays fan stand up and cheer in December or January. So they had to do what they've done well in the past, which is to take chances on guys who make you say "eh."

If they're right on a few of them, they have a chance to compete in the American League East. If not, forget it.

Replacing Carl Crawford's offense and defense isn't the big challenge. Figuring out how to build a bullpen with no money is.

Maybe the Rays get a boost with J.P. Howell coming back, after missing all of 2010 with an elbow injury. Howell told reporters this week that he could return by late April.

Maybe they get a boost from Adam Russell, acquired from the Padres in the Jason Bartlett deal. Maybe they hit with Joel Peralta, signed as a December free agent for $925,000.

Or maybe it's Farnsworth.

I'll guarantee you it's not the way the Rays wanted to build their bullpen. But I also know it's the only choice they had.

Baltimore's line-up is much improved and if they get some pitching, which is debatable, they just might pass the Rays.  I dont think its ridiculous to think the Rays wont finish in last.

"Oh please. Don't even act like the Rays will be relevant this year after this offseasons firesale. This is a last place team after all the good players they lost in free agency and traded away."

looks like someone forgot Baltimore is still in the same division
