Could injuries derail the Phillies?

First, you wonder if the Phillies are ever going to be healthy this year.

Then you wonder if it's going to matter.

Even with Jimmy Rollins, Brad Lidge, Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ on the disabled list, the Phillies have still looked like one of the two best teams in the National League (along with the Cardinals). Now comes the news that even though Lidge has been activated, setup man Ryan Madson will take his place on the DL after breaking his right big toe after blowing a save against the Giants the other day in San Francisco.

Madson broke his toe by kicking a metal chair, and you either laugh or (if you're a Phillies fan) complain about his stupidity.

You can also say that a Phillies team that has been remarkably healthy the last two seasons is dealing with the type of problems that most of their rivals already have.

"They were due," said one scout who works for another National League East team.

Yes, but could injuries keep the Phillies from winning the division?

"It would have to be pretty bad," said the same scout, who watched the Phillies recently.

The scout said the loss of Rollins seems to have affected the Phillies more than the other injuries. Rollins has been out since April 12 with a strained calf.

"He's the catalyst in that lineup," the scout said. "[Shane] Victorino's trying to do it, trying to be that guy, but it's not his style."

The Phillies fell out of first place in the National League East this week, for the first time since May 30, 2009. They're half a game behind the Mets, heading into this weekend's series against New York.

Madson hasn't been great as the fill-in closer (he was 4 for 6 in save situations, with a 7.00 ERA), but losing him costs manager Charlie Manuel an important late-inning option.

Don't worry fellas; I'm positive Brad Lidge won't give up a homerun every night out. AHHHH HA HA HA HA HA! Great debut for Brad Lidge. Send that guy back to the minors.
.1 innings pitched ERA 27.00

Keep Ryan Madson away from folding chairs. AHHH HA HA HA HA HA HA!
