The Red Sox avoided arbitration with closer Jonathan Papelbon, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal for a little more than $9 million, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

Papelbon made $6.25 million last year, when he had 38 saves and a 1.85 ERA.

Papelbon avoids arbitration with Red Sox

With the pitching/defense strategy, the Red Sox should have much closer games.  He is going to have to earn that 9M this year..

Papelbon avoids arbitration with Red Sox

i didn't like the style and the personality of paps,,,,but he's one of the top closers in the game despites his roller-coasters saves,,,,,of course i want to see the sox deep on the basement on the standings,,,,but this will not be happen because the sox are a great team,,,,and they'll have a close race with my Yanks all year along,,,,no doubt about it,,,,,excuse me,,, but saying they'll be lucky if they finish in 2nd place doesn't seems to be a realistic comment

So the team that will be "Lucky" to finish first gets to pay more for their closer.  Why do I think you are a Yankee fan???

Papelbon avoids arbitration with Red Sox

Baseball is so difficult to predict. There is no guarantee the Yankees will have the same type of year they had as last year, pitching or hitting. There could be injuries, nobody knows. To state even before spring training that the Sox will be lucky to finish 2nd, is moronic.

Papelbon avoids arbitration with Red Sox

There are some ignorant baseball fans who look at the moves that the Red Sox made and say, "Where's the big name Superstar?" Those people usually turn out to be Yankee fans. Having said that, right now I am picking the Yankees to win the AL east by 5 - 7 games over the Red Sox, with the Red Sox taking the wild card with the best pitching and defense in baseball.
