Tigers could be big spenders -- next year

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Tigers just got done announcing a trade that saves them money. They aren't pursuing Matt Holliday, or Jason Bay, or even anyone who will make half of what Holliday or Bay will command in 2010 dollars.

Yeah, but wait till next year.

With the three-way trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees and Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks, the Tigers now have just $33 million committed to their 2011 payroll. That means that even if they want to cut their overall spending to the $80 million range (it's far too early to know if that will be the number), they would have $30-40 million to spend for new players.

In other words, look for them to be big spenders -- maybe very big spenders.

The $33 million only covers two players: Miguel Cabrera at $20 million and Carlos Guillen at $13 million. It would grow quickly to $48 million if Magglio Ordonez gets enough plate appearance to vest his $15 million option, and obviously grows again with Justin Verlander's salary.

But no one else the Tigers currently control would be due a big arbitration-determined salary in 2011, and they have no pending free agents that are must-signs. So unless the Michigan economy gets so bad that owner Mike Ilitch decides to cut his spending in half, there will be plenty of money available.

The reason is simple. Check out the big contracts that expire after 2010: Jeremy Bonderman ($12.5 million in 2010), Dontrelle Willis ($12 million), Nate Robertson ($10 million) and Brandon Inge ($6.6 million).

That's a lot of money, and the Tigers should be able to spend at least some of it -- next year.

Mr. Knobler,

Do you any possibility at all that we can trade Inge now? I believe he is at his career max value right now and

and  the timing would be right.  Then aggressively pursuing Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals who I just

happen to think is the next Aurelio Rodriguez or even a Brooks Robinson.  Again, do you see any of this potentially

happening?
