MILWAUKEE -- The Cardinals originally believed they would have third baseman Troy Glaus in their lineup by May 1. More recently, they've been saying they would get a June 1 update on Glaus' condition, as he comes back from surgery.
Now, more and more, the Cardinals are prepared for the possibility that Glaus won't come back this year at all.
General manager John Mozeliak said today that his impression now is that it's "less than 50-50" that Glaus will be able to play in 2009. Mozeliak emphasized that no decision had yet been made, and that he still didn't have all the information from the doctors who are treating Glaus.
Glaus, who hit 27 home runs and drove in 99 runs for the Cards in 2008, underwent surgery on Jan. 21. The surgery dealt with a stretched muscle in Glaus' chest.
The Cardinals have struggled offensively, to the point where they have scored the fewest runs in baseball this month. They could see some improvement soon, with Rick Ankiel coming back after almost three weeks on the disabled list, and Ryan Ludwick expected back from the DL this Friday in San Francisco.
