Kimbo Slice....Boom! Outta Here!

Posted on: October 6, 2008 4:42 pm

I had never heard of Kimbo Slice before Elite XC started pumping him up for their debut show on CBS a few months ago. I was a casual fan of PRIDE, but I had always been a UFC guy. I remember watching Royce Gracie during the UFC's first incarnation. It was much more barbaric and typically the winner was the guy that didn't leave with a broken arm, leg or face. In those days, ultimate fighting was not so much about sport as it was about survival. I think the movement to create more of a sport out of MMA was a great thing, but its also opened the door for a lot of commercial opportunities for organizations that are looking to cash in on the sports sudden popularity. I had been a big Pride and UFC guy, but this EXC stuff seemed a little too campy...too much production value to cover up not enough talent. The only thing Elite XC has that is actually interesting to me is women's MMA. I am all about giving the women an opportunity to step in and prove themselves. The most annoying part of EXC was the creation of this Kimbo Slice guy. I like a good underdog as much as the next guy, but how can you be the underdog when no one even knows who any of the other guys in your weight class are? They hand pick tomato cans for this guy to beat on in order to prop him up longer and obviously squeeze more money out of his fights. Slice knows next to nothing about martial arts. The fact that he went down and turtled to a pink haired dude from the weight class below him made the fall much more compelling than the rise. The rise of Kimbo was artificial. He fought a few bums and CBS pumped a ton of money into him. He really hadn't earned any respect from the legions of educated MMA fans. Everyone said he would not stand a chance against an even average MMA fighter. That prophecy was revealed last Saturday night when Kimbo was defeated by Seth Petruzelli, a journeyman light heavyweight that wasn't even scheduled to be on TV that night. The interesting part of this scenario is whether EXC is going to start treating Petruzelli like the next big thing now...pink hair and all. Given the Kimbo build-up, they should give this guy a huge push. I somehow suspect that is not going to happen, because this was not about competition or making a good fight. This was about the old saying..."Any news is good news." In this case, I don't buy it though. The Kimbo goose didn't lay the golden egg, and EXC hasn't dont much to prepare themselves for life after Kimbo. They need to thing of something fast, because Kimbo went the way of Buster Douglas, Chaminade and Carl Douglas singing "Kung Fu Fighting." His 15 minutes are up!

Kimbo Slice....Boom! Outta Here!

Am I the only one that thinks that this fight was fixed? Kimbo got hit  ONE time. Go back and look at the fight. After Slice got nailed with the FIRST punch Petruzelli threw   ALL OF HIS OTHER PUNCHES MISSED BADLY. I find it hard to beleive that a man the size of Slice can get knocked out  WITH ONE PUNCH  Even before the fight began I thought that something was up. Ken Shamrock gets injured the very day of the bout. THIS IS CRAZY. This would never happen in real life. Maybe Slice can find a way to get up with Vince and get a bout with THE BIG SHOW. He sure has a skill for acting.  ( " AFTER PARTY ANYONE " ) This is what KIMBO said to the crowd after the fight. Doesn"t anyone else find that ODD?

Kimbo Slice....Boom! Outta Here!

Gosh dang that was sweet and that's all that has to be said about that. But, I will just add that I hadn't heard much about him either, just odds and ends until Jim Rome started smoking his tool and saying kimbo was off the charts and then ka-boom.

ROme wROng! sorry RO-RO ya missed it again!  Once again hopped on the bandwagon too late.

That's odd, Valley. I listen to Rome pretty much every day. The only thing I ever heard him say positive about Kimbo was he didn't know how David Blaine could take two Kimbo shots to the abdomen. If you saw the video of it, you would know exactly why he said it. I am not sure Rome is on any bandwagon right now other than Manny and horse racing. And I really wish there was a way Seth Petrucelli could KO that Little Red Feather racing crap!

Kimbo Slice....Boom! Outta Here!

I hadn't heard much about Kimbo untill his fight a couple of months ago and I got on youtube to check out some of his street fights, and he is certainly a great steet fighter but that's it. He has no martial arts skills what so ever. And most of the guys he was fighting didn't know how to fight really. He is in no way a mixed martial arts fighter and Seth Petruzelli proved that. If this guy did this to him imagine what Ken Shamrock would have done. I know Shamrock is getting pretty old but Kimbo Slice does not belong in this sport. He wouldn't be able to handle Shamrock on the mat. There is no doubt he packs a punch but there is more to this sport than that. I'm glad this happened because it is clear that he was only used as a marketing tool. He has been exposed and the guy beat him at his own game. He punched him in the jaw and down the mighty Slice went. Petruzelli didn't even need to get him on the mat and fight it out all he had to do was punch him in his glass jaw and it stunned him and it was all over after that. The worst part like you said is that the guy wasn't even in his wieght class, come on Kimbo that's embarassing. I would be embarassed if I was CBS, the guy that they brought in to be their superstar got laid out in the first round of a fight against a light heavy weight. Where do they go from here, are they going to make this guy out to be their next star and give him 3 or 4 easy fights and say look he's undefeated and he is the next Chuck Liddell.
