You can't always get what you want

Well late last night reports were rolling that UK had sealed the deal with the Henrys.  The talk of the best recruiting class ever was sweeping the bluegrass.  The Blue and white had already received their 8th title.  Then after midnight the actual news broke, Henry is staying at Kansas.  Big bummer for the Wildcats.  The craziest recruiting year ever apparently has finally came to an end.  While I would love to have Xavier playing in Lexington next year as many other wildcat fanse, we need to ask ourselves one thing, "Did we really need him?"  The obvious answer is most likely yes.  He would have answered our biggest questions since the Meeks departure.  Who is our shooting guard? Who will make 3's? Who will the final scholarship go to?

We still have John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, Jon Hood, and Darnell Dodson coming into town.  We still have an all-american candidate coming back with the Patrick Patterson.  We have another great returnee who is actually out in New Zealand playing for the USA under 19 team, Darius Miller.  If you throw in the 2 starters from last year that will most likely be at the end of the bench, Harris and Stevenson along with 2 guys that can be really good in their own ways with Liggins and Harrelson.

The question is not did we want him, because we did and much more than the Kansas faithful.  The question is do we really need him?

Haters, sounds like arkansas fans are a little worried.  What do you know about cheating maddie.  Didn't one of your boys come out talking about how everyone cheats at Arkansas.
Just because your scared don't mean you gotta hate.

You can't always get what you want

It is the same at UK as it was at Memphis. Cal recruits the best team money can buy. Check to see just what kind of cars they will be driving in Lexington. The NCAA is a joke, they don't catch Cal because they don't look. Enjoy the success UK, Cal bought it with your boosters money. Memphis fans should be upset with how the wins were achieved instead of being mad about him leaving. Remind me who Memphis beat last year ....  Zags ....    ????   Does anyone find it funny that the Memphis Grizzlies pass on former Tiger players and draft from the team that just knocked off Memphis.    Arthur (Kansas) last year   ....   Carroll(mizzu) this year

You can't always get what you want

I think that it might be too much!

you can only play 5 guys and if you have to meny good players on one team, someone will be un happy.\

Now Coach cal know show to deal with superstars but when he is dealing with them he doesn't have time to be the great coach that he is.

he has enogh talent on this group and with the respect UK is getting and with his experiance he must do at least sweet16!

anything short is a bad thing!!

Are you smokin something...You cant even think about putting Memphis on the same page with UK.  They have agood year every now and then...UK has bad years every now and then.  There is a huge difference and you are about to see it.

Fost...sorry to sound defensive.  It is a good thread.  I think I am more reacting to Robic's comments.  He seems to have forgotten that these guys had Memphis on the top of their lists.  He said now that he is at UK he can recruit the best.  I guess Memphis did all right with scrubs.

Cal got all of those players you are right.  But since cal is now at uk, UK got all of those players.

Matt Pilgrim is a guy I think has a lot of upside.  People say he lacks consistency, but he is a practice legend.  One thing though about Pilgrim is he didn't even start for Hampton.

Also all of the recruits weren't Memphis bound.

Technically only one was signed and that was Dodson.  Cousins was a verbal.  Wall was a lean.  Bledsoe said if Cal was at Memphis he would have went to Florida.  Orton was ours and so was Hood.

I'm not hating on Memphis, I actually like Memphis.  I think you all got a steal for a head coach.  Pastner will be a great coach and a great recruiter.  This little blog was not made to piss off Memphis fans, just to celebrate a great recruiting year.  Yes Cal was the reason all of these players signed but oh well.  We lost recruits when we fired Billy G, we just got better ones and sorry they wanted to play for Cal whereever he was at.

yep, all the recruits except one left Memphis.  all of the recruits (even the one) were asked to come to UK.  they were all going to Memphis.  ALL OF THEM.....even Xavier...UK did not get these guys to sign during the signing period.  Memphis got these guys.  UK tradition and multiple championships did not convince them.  Little ole Memphis in the crappy conference out recruited UK for these guys.  The only one that UK convinced was Cal,  he got the recruits then UK got them.
Now Memphis has had a coach for a couple of months.  Our coach has never been a head college basketball coach and he has won as many national championships as the UK coach.  And other than our recruiting class leaving, he has done pretty well convincing players that little ole Memphis in the crappy conference is a good place to play.  And the Cal cast off, or maybe you would call him a throwaway, Matt Pilgrim might have more of an upside than UK gave him credit for or maybe that was just Cal's assessment, but Memphis might
be willing to find out.
We will see what the future brings, but it looks like Memphis fans can trust what they hear from their coach.

yeah one whole recruit got away.  Calipari sucks.  Only one recruit out of 7 that is not bad.  Yeah over the years there will be a few to get away but I do agree with Robic that UK will have its pick of recruits for years to come.  UK will do better with getting recruits than Memphis, because we have a better conference and better practice facility.  We also have a better tradition.  If you throw in Calipari he makes those recruits want to come here even though some may not know about the history.  It will be a deadly combo.

How many recruits did memphis lose after they lost their coach?  I bet it was more than the 1 UK lost.  You can argue that memphis has been better recently and I agree but that will change very soon.

You can't always get what you want

tell John Robic that.  He indicated that because UK is UK they can get whoever they want.  Interesting that Memphis did get Henry.  Oh...and Memphis had its questions answered because it wasn't rebuilding from and NIT team.  I know this sounds like sour grapes, but Memphis fans reject the notion that UK can get whoever they want because they are UK.  UK got Hood and Orton.  Calipari got the rest.  It is true though that Cal did try to recruit Liggins and UK beat him out on that one.  Cal took Tyreke Evans instead.  How did that work out for UK?
